about

'New Brighton' is the very first song and story of a Rootsfolklore series. The songs are based on real life and age-old family stories – tales of love, loss, survival and justice across the ages.

Written in present day, “New Brighton” is the very first chapter in the series before they take us back in time through the music of their heartlands. To set the present writing scene, Venus was brightly glistening overhead while the Byron Bay lighthouse pulsed at the distant shoreline – gentle waves were calming the chaos of the world for a moment. The Queensland and New South Wales borders were only hours from closing when Daryl and Dawn crossed sandy paths with a seafaring Gypsy man. He gave them a pouch of crystals and left them with the ominous and yet enlightening words: “Live as though it’s your last day – love will light the way”. They cherished their last precious moments in Byron Shire, writing this song under the stars, before heading home and into lockdown.

Enchanting and deeply soothing, ‘New Brighton’ was recorded in Daryl and Dawn’s home studio with principal members of the Australian Session Orchestra, Daniel Lopez on violin and Eleanor Streatfeild on cello, as well as fellow roots musician Hughie Doherty on djembe. Nálii Kreéture is the stunning visual artist behind the picture series that will unfold with the release of each song.

With a backdrop of rising fears and mass unrest, of devastating loss and deep personal suffering, and a global pandemic about to freeze the world in time; the powers that be continued to sweep unspeakable deeds under the exotic rugs of their grand chambers. There is a collateral beauty to be found in the ruins. There are no winners in a war, though love transcends the battle, in the end.

lyrics

Upon the cliffs of the Minyon falls, Before the mouth of Repentance Creek.
Poured all the crystals in our hands, Unfolding words begin to speak.

Said the old man of the bay,
Live as though it’s your last day. Said the truth can be hard to take, but love will light the way. Love will light the way.

Drawn from the mountains and the plains, down to the edge of the eastern seas.
Trekked through the ice storms and the flames, the crossing road led us to meet.

Said the old man of the bay,
Live as though it’s your last day. Said the truth can be hard to take, But love will light the way. Love will light the way.

Venus looking down on
you and me in the setting sun. Diamond veil cast over us. Lost and found, tangled hearts undone.
You and me in the setting sun. You and me in the setting sun.

Love will light the way.
