The 5th chapter of Day of Embers’ 9-part twisted folklore series; following tragedy at sea, this is where the tale takes a sharp turn.

Washed ashore from the shipwreck after losing his love - their dreams of a new life together swallowed by the sea, his weary body is pulled up from the foam and debris. His rescuer, a cotton farmer, takes him in and the farmer’s wife nurses him back to health. He becomes their farmhand, thereafter.

It soon becomes clear that all is not well, when he sees how the farmer is treating his wife. From his humble lodgings by the farmhouse, the abuse he witnesses can no longer be tolerated. In the dead of night, he hears the woman’s cries and finds the farmer’s callous hands around her neck as she gasps for her last breath. The farmhand bursts into the house, striking the murderous farmer with his scythe, saving the farmer’s wife from certain death.

The farmhand is forced to flee the county, riding off into the misty night. Guided to safety by a fellow bandit, he finds refuge in a cave close to the shore, thankful to live another day.
