about

'Adrift' is the third chapter from Day of Embers - a moment of clarity after unspeakable violence and upheaval, summoning your strength and doing what you must in order to survive.

This chapter was inspired by Peggy Mullan’s journey from Derry to Canada after her family was caught in the crossfires of war. There is certainly a fighting spirit in this bloodline and a strong sense of justice - fighting for their homeland, fighting for basic human rights. While Peggy’s father was fiercely supportive of this fight, there was a moment of clarity for her mother- when the battle would also involve her young children as soldiers. This was no longer a war they wanted part of- “the ship’s adrift, ‘tis time to leave”.

lyrics

Barefoot at the broken cliff
Me Snow White gown billows & whips
The Sea of sorrow kissed the skies
The salty rain fell from me eyes

Our pockets were robbed by the lords
Now food is scarce can ní afford
We lost our pa to amber drink
He’s still alive though can ní think

At ease, at ease, at ease, at ease

My brothers dear were called to stand
Fight for the cross, protect our land
But this is not a war we’ve won
Our babies carry loaded guns

At ease, at ease, at ease, at ease

Heavens aflame & hell duth freeze
When will us soldiers rest at ease

At ease, at ease, at ease, at ease

The gypsy blood runs through me veins
I see a life in higher plains
To Risk our lives and love at sea
Alas our last heart beat is free

To take a leap or take a bow
What is the future for me now
I chance to love, I chance to breathe
The ship’s adrift, ‘tis time to leave

At ease, at ease, at ease, at ease
At ease, at ease, at ease, at ease
